Michael Dowling School, Urban Environmental Magnet is a K-5 environmental magnet school in the Minneapolis Public School District. We are an E-STEAM school (environmental, science, technology, engineering, arts and math) with a GLAD philosophy. Our school day is from 8:40 AM - 3:10 PM. Our student population consists of approximately 500 students. Our building principal is Joseph Rossow. Our unique historic school is located on 20+ acres of land along the Mississippi River in the Longfellow neighborhood of Minneapolis - 3900 W. Picture day is coming up on Wednesday, October 12th, 2016. Forms will be coming home in Wednesday folders this week. Please do not send forms in before picture day - have your student bring them in on picture day. Picture Re-take day is Tuesday, November 15th, 2016. 


Volunteers will be needed for picture day! We have volunteers work in two hour shifts throughout the day starting at 8:50.  When you volunteer for picture day, you receive a free photo package of your choice. Contact Val Ausland at or 612.668.4432 to volunteer






Conferences will be held on Tuesday, October 18th, 2016 from 3:30 - 7:30 pm and Wednesday, October 19th, 2016 from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm. If you did not attend the open house and/or have not signed up for conferences, please contact your teacher to set up a date and time for you to meet. MEA break will take place on Thursday, October 20th and Friday, October 21st. We will not have school starting on Wednesday, October 19th for conferences through Friday, October 21st for MEA Break. School will resume on Monday, October 24th.

The procedures for touring and requesting schools will be new this year. Please join us on one of the following dates for a school tour if you are considering Dowling for the 2017-2018 school year. Minneapolis Public Schools has adopted a new "Visit our Schools" campaign as described below. The window for putting in your choice card will be from November 15th through February 4th (choice card deadline). Please check back after November 7th for possible additional tour dates at Dowling before cards are due. 


Visit Our Schools Campaign


Minneapolis Public Schools announces the launch of it's new Visit Our Schools Campaign. This program allows current and prospective families along with community members an opportunity to "see and feel" our buildings. Between October 15th and November 7th schools will be holding visit our school events. These events will be your chance to check us out, see if we are the right choice for your student for the 2017-2018 school year. Please refer to the following schedule for dates:

We are still looking for 2 Reading Corps Volunteers here at Dowling. 

Would you love to help children grow their reading skills and succeed in school? If your answer is yes, you can serve as a tutor with Minnesota Reading Corps at Dowling School. Whether you want to explore a career in education, re-enter the workforce, or give back to your community, you can be a child's hero as a tutor. 


As a Literacy Tutor, you'll use research-proven strategies to help elementary students gain the reading skills they need to thrive in school and in life. Positions available include: Kindergarten Focus and Elementary (K-3) Literacy Tutors. There are openings for part-time and full-time tutors, and tutors serve most of their hours during the regular school day.


Tutors come from many backgrounds and include recent high school and college grads, career changers, stay-at-home parents and retirees. With extensive training, support from onsite coaches, and evidence-based strategies, Reading Corp tutors are well-equipped to change lives. Tutors receive a living allowance, education award and federal student loan forbearance.
