DOWLING SCHOOL FOREST NEWS
Alert: oak wilt disease is alive and active in the community!  At our last School Forest committee meeting, our assigned DNR forester, Jim Wilson, walked the property with us.  We identified and marked trees that have succumbed to oak wilt, a fungal infection that attacks the vascular system of the tree.  He recommended removal of the dead trees along with removal of any trees within a 30’ radius of the dead trees, as oak wilt is transmitted via the root systems.  At least 35 trees will be affected.  School district leadership has allotted enough funding for eleven trees to be removed, a task that will be done by Precision Tree in the third week of December.  Sadly, the beautiful wood cannot be reused unless it’s treated to kill the fungal spores, and we are unable to do that.  Consequently all the wood will be hauled away.  As discouraged as we are about the problem of oak wilt and the loss of our beautiful and precious trees, we’re using the situation as a learning opportunity for students, and as a chance to replant trees that improve diversity of species.
Once the trees are removed, the next task of the committee is to erect birdhouses built last year by Dowling students who are now in fourth grade.  If you would like to assist with this project, please contact Tracy Young by phone (612-668-7613) or email (tracy.young@mpls.k12.mn.us).

This tour will give you all of the general information about what our school has to offer, if you are looking for an upper grade, you are welcome to join us. We try to keep all tours under an hour, if you are part of a very large group it may take longer.

UPCOMING EVENTS/SCHOOL NEWS

****************** WINTER BREAK*****************

DECEMBER 22ND THROUGH JANUARY 5TH

Winter break is coming - school will be closed starting on Monday, December 22nd and will be back in session on Monday, January 5th.

LUNCHROOM VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!!!

We are in need of ongoing volunteers to help in our lunchroom. Our lunch hours are 11:15 - 11:40 (grade 3) - 11:35 - 12:05 (grade 1) -  11:45 - 12:15 (Room 107) - 12:20 - 12:50 (grade 2, Room 106 and 100) - 12:50 - 1:10 (grades 4 and 5)

We need 1 or 2 people who can come on a regular weekly basis to help kids get through the lunch line and just walk around the lunchroom helping students open packages or milk etc..... staff are present in the lunchroom during all lunch hours. This is a great way to get involved with your school community, and it would really help us out as lunchtime can be hectic without enough helping hands! If you are interested in setting up a schedule, please contact Val Ausland at 612-668-4432 or valerie.ausland@mpls.k12.mn.us asap so we can start after the winter break.
