We are at a close for the 2015-2016 school year.
Three Big Changes for the 2016-2017 year will be with our Open Houses, Title 1 and Curriculum Night.
We are going to have the Kindergarten open house on Monday, August 29, 2016 from 5:00-6:00 p.m. This is two days before Kindergarten students will start school.
We are combining Open House and Curriculum Night for grades first through fifth. Open House/Curriculum/Title 1 night will be September 22, 2016 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. All families K-5 are invited to attend the Curriculum and Title 1 presentation. This change was made because teachers have a shorter time to prepare their classrooms for students and work on the GLAD and Guided Math Units. Also with this change it allows our Teachers the opportunity to sign up to be a part of one night event. The events that the staff can choose from are, River Walk, Math Night, Cultural Night, Get Out Doors Events, PTO meetings, and end of the year Music Concert to name a few.
We know that families want to bring in their school supplies early; so, on Thursday, August 25, from 8:00 to 4:00 you may bring in supplies for your student(s). Please know during this time Dowling staff will be in Professional Development training.
We have also added a Curriculum component for the classroom teachers to share with families. During the September 22nd Open House, we will have three - 30 minute presentations in the Auditorium. These presentations will provide parents an overview of the basics of Guided Math, GLAD and Title 1. The times for the presentations will be from 5:00-5:30 p.m.; 5:40-6:10 p.m. and 6:20-6:50 p.m. In between the presentations, families will visit the classroom and get more detailed curriculum information based on the grade level of your student(s). At the end of the Open House, we will have feed back sheets for families to fill out, letting us know what went well and any suggestions for change.
The student classroom assignments will be mailed out the week of August 8, 2016. We are going to continue to reduce the class size for ELA/Science and Social Studies for the next school year in grades Kindergarten through 4th grade.
Expanding our educational model:
We are expanding the current model during our ELA (English Language Arts) time. We have hired additional staff to help lower the class size during the ELA portion of the day. For Kindergarten through 4th grade, we will have a fourth licensed teacher to teach during the ELA time block along with support for smaller math groups at certain grade levels. The Fifth grade team will have a 32-hour Associate Educator that will support all three ELA blocks as well as an additional teacher to support math.
What does this mean for some of our students being taught by another teacher other than their homeroom teacher during the ELA, Science, and Social Studies Block? Each grade level Kindergarten through 4th grade teachers will meet and place 6 to 8 students with the fourth classroom teacher during the ELA, Science and Social Study Block. Each ELA block teacher will do the report cards for Reading, Science, and Social Studies and have a conference in the fall and spring with their students and parents.
The Kindergarten ELA block will be from 9:00 to 10:30 and then Kindergarten has recess 10:30 to 11:00 and lunch at 11:00 to 11:30. The ELA wrap up will be 11:30 to 12:00.
Grade 1 ELA, Science and Social Studies Block 9:00 to 11:10
Grade 2 ELA, Science and Social Studies Block 9:00 to 11:15
Grade 3 ELA, Science and Social Studies Block 12:50 to 3:07
Grade 4 ELA, Science and Social Studies Block 12:45 to 3:09
One example would be a fourth grade student would be in Ms. Haupts homeroom for morning meeting, Math in the morning and then ELA, Science and Social Studies in the afternoon in the Ag building from 12:45 to 3:09 with Mrs. Young. We are also keeping a list of students that had the fourth ELA teacher from the previous school year, and will try not to move a student two years in a row. If this does happen, and you have concerns, please contact the homeroom teacher.
Using this approach to lower class sizes has helped in our individual student growth. Each grade level team is working very hard to make sure there is constant communication between all four of the ELA teachers.
Grade five will have 3 educational blocks. One block will be ELA, another will be Math and the third will be Science and Social Studies. Each Block will be 80 minutes.
English Language Arts, Science and Social Studies time.
Guided Language Acquisition Design (GLAD) was used in Kindergarten through 5th grade this school year. The GLAD strategies enhance our teachers’ skills to design and incorporate standards-based instruction using an integrated approach to the thematic English Language Arts lesson. In addition, these strategies encourage a classroom environment that values the student, provides authentic opportunities for the use of academic language, while maintaining the highest standards and expectations for all students.
Guided Math is a classroom structure designed to facilitate differentiated instruction during core math time. During Guided Math, small flexible groups of students rotate through several teacher-led and independent stations, all in support of the day’s core lesson. The intent of the guided math model is to provide small groups of students different entry points to the same grade level core lesson based on their current levels of understanding.
(Environmental, Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math)
E-STEAM will be part of the ELA/Science/Social Studies block, once a week for 40-60 minutes. Each grade will plan and implement grade level team Environmental Science activities. We have also created a new E.E. specialist class for the third and fourth grade using a six-day rotating schedule. This will be in addition to art, music, pool, gym and media. Ms. Young will be our School Forest and E-STEAM coordinator for our K-5 program.
We are going to start phase three of the playground improvements in early August. Flagship Company should be done by the first week of September. Phase three will incorporate new railings in the upper level, painting the lower level railings, seating for the outdoor theater, and the final Asphalt pours.
