THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30TH - 12 - 2PM 3RD GRADE FASHION SHOW - DOWLING AUDITORIUM - join our 3rd grade classrooms as they present our annual Fashion Show! Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend, this is a fun event that students will talk about for years. Join us!
Dowling third grade students have completed their introduction to bird watching, learning about the value of looking and listening while outside.  They've learned a number of different bird calls, and how to identify locally common birds by sight and sound.  Students got a chance to practice with binoculars on a bird-watching hike along the Mississippi River Parkway and Winchell trail overlooking the beautiful Mississippi River gorge.  A list of birds we heard and/or saw include: chickadees, crows, a pileated woodpecker, pigeons, a red-tailed hawk and a bald eagle, blue jays, white-breasted nut-hatches, and gold finches.  In addition, students learned about cavity nesters, squirrel nests, and the fall call of the gray squirrel.  Now our students know that all ducks don't say, "Quack!"
The school Forest committee is working on placing bird and bat houses built by last year's third grade students.  We have a number of small, medium and large wooden houses ready to attract a variety of bird life to our property.  In addition, the SF committee is looking to erect bird feeders around the school, especially in places where students can see them while in their classrooms.  For this we need shepherds' crooks on which to hang feeders.  If you could donate one to the school, please drop it off in the office or out in the greenhouse area, or call Mrs. Young at 612-668-7613 to set up a delivery or pick-up.
Finally, we are in need of bird seed - do you have a bag of black sun-flower seeds you could donate?  Mixed seed of all sorts is great; Dowling birds aren't really picky!  :o)  TweetTweet!  (Thank you!)
