Dear families of Minneapolis Public Schools,

We are committed to keeping families informed of issues affecting our students. With that in mind, we want you to know that the Minneapolis Police Department is investigating an incident that occurred this morning.
At a bus stop with Dowling and Sanford students, a man unaffiliated with the schools drove up and asked students questions about which school they attend and how often they are at the bus stop. Although your child may not have been at this particular stop, we’re informing you because your child’s school utilizes this stop.
We want to reassure you that the safety of our students is a top priority, and we have already confirmed with the Police Department that extra patrols will be added to the area.
Please help us highlight the importance of safety by taking a few minutes to remind your child not to listen to, talk to or approach strangers. Additional safety guidelines to share with your child can be found by visiting www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/police, clicking on “Crime Prevention Resources” and scrolling down to “Personal Safety Information.” Please report any suspicious activity to the Minneapolis Police Department by calling 911.

Two of the unique aspects to Dowling are our swimming pool and our close proximity to the Mississippi River. All students at Dowling use our pool, including our students with special needs. We provide swim diapers and laundry services for these students on a daily basis. If you are able to make a donation of liquid laundry soap for a high efficiency washing machine or packages of swim diapers in all sizes, we would greatly appreciate it. Any donations can be brought to the main office.

We also take advantage of having the river directly across the street from our building. Many times during the year our classrooms take trips down to the water, and for the safety of our students we require that a lifeguard be present at these times. If you are lifeguard certified and are willing to be put on our volunteer call list for these times, please contact Val Ausland by email or call 612.668.4432

Our parent pick up area will temporarily be held in the front foyer. Please enter through the designated doors at the far end of the canopy area, do not enter through the handicap door, this is for our special needs students. Sign your student out in the book and wait for your student. Please do not enter the auditorium or leave the designated area, our special needs students will be loading buses at the same time and need the space provided for them. If you are a Kindergarten parent, please check in with Val Ausland, Family Liaison before leaving with your student. Dismissal time begins at 3:05 and all students must be picked up by 3:20, staff will not be available to supervise students past this time so please pick up your student(s) on time.
