Connie Rooney- Physical/Health Disabilities Teacher; Special Education

Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year!

I am looking forward to working with staff and teaching students at Dowling School this year! I am a special education teacher in the Physical/Health Disabilities (P/HD) Program. The students in the program receive support from both myself and program support staff. The support staff (paraprofessionals), under guidance from licensed staff, provide assistance in the area(s) of academics, organizational skills, work completion skills, and maintenance of health and physical needs. Students in this program spend time in the general education setting and receive support as needed from paraprofessionals trained to assist them. In my classroom setting I provide additional direct instruction in the areas of reading, written expression, math, assistive technology, and organizational/work completion skills. Services from other school staff such as speech/language skills, fine/gross motor skills, and health/physical needs may also be a part of the school day for many students in this program.

I have had the opportunity to teach special education students in the P/HD Program in the Minneapolis Public Schools for over 20 years. Prior to teaching in Minneapolis I worked as a P/HD consultant for Intermediate District #287. My husband and I have lived in Minneapolis for over 25 years. Both our daughters have experienced enriched learning environments, having attended Hale, Field, Anthony Middle School, and South and Washburn High Schools. My interests include reading, running and yoga, kayaking, and spending time with my family.
