Reading/ Writing Workshop:  We began our second reading unit this week. This unit introduces the way that characters shape stories. The areas we focused on included; listening and asking questions, finding and recounting details from a fable, describing a characters traits and motivation, explaining how illustrations contribute to the mood of the story, and identifying similes and how they add to a story. In addition, the class worked on the elements of a fable and began using the writing process to create their own fables.

Math: We completed our second unit on place value and problem solving. Then we started our third unit, which focuses on multiplication and division facts for factors 6 – 9. The class reviewed the commutative property of multiplication to find known facts of 6, 7, 8, and 9. They also used a letter to represent an unknown in a math equation. Finally, they used the skill of decomposing numbers to work on facts of 6.Please have your child focus on sections E, I and F if they are using IXL at home.

Science: We continued with our “Structures of Life” science unit. The children went on a seed hunt and predicted how the seed might have travelled. They also began looking at the skeletal system of the human body. Our focus has been on the functions of the skeletal system, which include support, protection, and movement. We put paper skeletons together, made pasta skeletons, and labeled the bones of the human skeletal system. Finally, we began learning about fossils and how they are used for research. Your child is welcome to log in at Fossweb and put Mr. Bones together again. Student login is thelen108 for both user name and password.
