Connie Rooney- Special Education Teacher-DCD Program
Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year!
I am looking forward to working with staff and teaching students at Dowling Environmental School this year!
I am a special education teacher in the DCD Program. The students in the program receive support from both myself and the program support staff. The support staff (special education assistants), under guidance from licensed staff, provide assistance in the area(s) of academics, self-help/functional skills, organizational skills, work completion skills, and maintenance of health and physical needs. Students in this program spend time in a general and special education setting. In my classroom setting, I provide additional direct instruction in the areas of reading, math, assistive technology, and organizational/work completion skills. Services from other school staff such as speech/language skills, fine and/or gross motor skills, and health/physical needs may also be a part of the school day for many students in this program.
I have had the opportunity to teach special education students in the Minneapolis Public Schools for over 20 years. Prior to teaching in Minneapolis, I worked as a Physical/Health Disabilities (P/HD) consultant for Intermediate District #287. My husband and I have lived in Minneapolis for over 30 years. Both our daughters have experienced enriched learning environments, having attended Hale, Field, Anthony Middle School, and South and Washburn High Schools. My interests include reading, running, kayaking, and spending time with my family.
